On Tuesday the Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu condemned violence that followed Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League triumph and restated unconditional support for police and gendarmes, warning against narratives that blame them.

According to Le Progres, he told the National Assembly he was angry about the disorder and criticised what he called a reversal of values that suggests officers create chaos.

He alluded to remarks by France Unbowed MP Clémence Guetté, who had accused the police of charging people not causing any trouble.

The Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said more than 890 arrests were made across Saturday and Sunday, an increase of more than 45% on 2025, when the club won its first European trophy. Lecornu added that 98% of those detained were men, 2% women, about one third were minors, 85% were French nationals, and repeat offenders were a minority. He argued the unrest was not supporter violence but part of a wider delinquency problem.

Seeking tougher consequences, the Prime Minister said criminal penalties alone were insufficient and that the issue of civil damages should be addressed so victims are properly compensated. He said he was not in favour of suspending welfare payments, but of allowing those benefits, aside from essential living costs, to help fund compensation.
