Sell-on clauses in Premier League transfers: Gamble, easy win or a necessity?

Sell-on clauses are shaping this summer’s market. According to NY Times, Southampton are set for cash from Mateus Fernandes’ £85m move from West Ham to Tottenham, and Arsenal would profit if Monaco sell Folarin Balogun.

Newcastle, who developed Elliot Anderson from age eight to 21, will receive nothing after Manchester City agreed to pay Nottingham Forest £116m, a British-record fee. No sell-on was included when he left in June 2024.

Clauses can be lucrative yet complex, requiring clarity on fee versus profit, triggers, payment dates and whether loan obligations count.

They often bridge price gaps. A £10m valuation might become £5m up front plus 20 per cent, returning £10m if a later sale hits £50m.

There have been notable pay-offs. Birmingham City profited when Jude Bellingham left Borussia Dortmund for Real Madrid in 2023. Non-league Maidenhead United also cashed in after Maximilian Kilman’s £40m move to West Ham in 2024, and chairman Peter Griffin told The Athletic the windfall would reshape long-term plans.

Ringmahon Rangers in the Republic of Ireland received a national-record sum for a team there when Caoimhin Kelleher joined Brentford from Liverpool in 2025.

For buyers, clauses can seal deals but cut resale profits. Southampton found Chelsea’s escalating share on Tino Livramento constrained pricing and settled for a package approaching £40m after seeking £50m.

Sometimes immediate cash takes priority. Under PSR pressure in 2024, Newcastle accepted Forest’s terms on Anderson without a clause, a reminder that windfalls are never guaranteed.
