The Red Devils confirmed their return to Europe with last week’s hard-fought win over Liverpool and seemed somewhat on the beach as they played out a forgettable goalless draw at Sunderland on Saturday.

Michael Carrick was tasked with returning United to the Champions League when he replaced Ruben Amorim in January with the club already out of the Carabao Cup, and he promptly succeeded in doing so.

But Lammens insists the club still has something to fight for as they look to finish in the Premier League’s top three.

“We can't stop here. I know the Champions League was our main goal, but we want to finish with as many points as possible,” he said after the Sunderland draw. “We want to finish with a good feeling to build on for next season, so we know how important these final games are for that.

“It's important to show up and deliver in every game. We are going to try to win every game possible. We want to give back to our fans, who have been very supportive this season.

“The manager has got the point across to us that this season is not finished. We have got Champions League, but we also want to finish third.

“We don't want to finish below third, we want to keep those other teams away from us. I hope - and I think - our team thinks the same way as me.”

Carrick rotated heavily into the match, making five changes as he handed Joshua Zirkzee, Mason Mount and Noussair Mazraoui chances to impress.

Zirkzee was hooked early in the second half, though, after struggling to make an impression, and Mount was similarly anonymous.

Carrick insisted, however, that he was not overly disappointed with their performances.

“They're not on trial,” he said. “As a team we could have been a bit better but we know what the boys can do.

“Everyone has contributed in such a good way, I'm pleased with the overall connection, communication and willingness to work for each other today.

“Today is a positive result in terms of the point. Was it going to be a perfect game? We weren't expecting a perfect game. It is what it is. It's not something we need to overthink and it's hard to be negative.

“We gave everything this week. We've got our last home game of the season that we will work towards this week. We look forward to it. It's important to finish the season strong and I think today is a positive note for us.”
