Serge Roy, the former AS Monaco striker and father of Stade Brestois coach Éric Roy, has died in Nice on Friday, aged 93.

According to L'Équipe, the Beaune-born forward enjoyed his finest years with Monaco, winning the Coupe de France in 1960 and the French title in 1961.

He scored 62 goals in 127 official matches for the club. He also played for Besançon, Olympique de Marseille, Valenciennes and OGC Nice, where he ended his career.

His son Éric began his own playing career at Nice in the late 1980s. Roy was capped once by France in April 1961 against Spain, and he was the oldest living French international.

Éric Roy said Brest will face Auxerre on four January in Ligue 1’s matchday 17, only days after his father’s passing, calling it a touching coincidence.

He added that Guy Roux used to introduce him as the son of the greatest Burgundian striker in history.
