The fight for Champions League places in Serie A has tightened after a dramatic weekend, with 12 matchdays still to play.
Inter, Cristian Chivu’s side, are 10 points clear at the top on 64 and look certain of a top-four finish. Football Italia notes that, Inter aside, the remaining three berths are wide open, with Italy’s disappointing UEFA coefficient this season ruling out a fifth Champions League spot.
Milan’s defeat to Parma on Sunday leaves them second on 54 points.
Napoli’s loss at Atalanta drops Antonio Conte’s team to third on 50, level with Roma in fourth after their 3-0 win this weekend.
The standout figure is the gap between third-placed Napoli and seventh-placed Atalanta, only five points.
That keeps Raffaele Palladino’s side, Serie A’s form team since November, firmly in contention despite sitting outside the top four. Between Milan in second and Atalanta in seventh, only nine points separate six clubs.
With fixtures between the top sides still to come and form shifting week by week, no club can treat Champions League qualification as secure. The next few weeks could prove decisive.
