Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa could be heading for the exit door as early as January despite publicly stating his “love” for the club, according to TeamTalk. The Italy international arrived from Juventus in the summer of 2024 with big expectations, but his impact has been limited by injuries and fierce competition for places. Last season he featured in just 14 matches, scoring two goals and adding two assists.

Chiesa started this campaign brightly, scoring in the 4-2 win over Bournemouth at Anfield on the opening day. However, Arne Slot’s decision to omit him from the Champions League squad was telling. The Dutchman instead chose to include teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha, whose rapid rise has been one of the stories of Liverpool’s season. TeamTalk report that Slot still sees Chiesa as “a useful player” and plans to use him, but his long-term role looks increasingly uncertain.

Sources told TeamTalk’s Dean Jones that a move back to Italy “will definitely be possible” in January if Chiesa chooses to seek a fresh challenge. The winger is said to be weighing up his options carefully. “He seems to love being part of Liverpool,” Jones explained, but warned that “wherever he goes next is likely to be a step down in level.”

Liverpool’s management must now decide whether to cash in on Chiesa or give him the minutes he needs to prove his worth. Slot’s faith in Ngumoha and other young players could tip the balance, particularly with a demanding domestic and European schedule ahead.
Chiesa arrived with a glittering reputation and many supporters believed he would add depth and quality to the flanks. Instead, injuries and inconsistent form have left him fighting for relevance in a squad where youth talent like Ngumoha is emerging fast.
Some fans may feel that letting Chiesa go in January would be premature, especially given the physical demands of competing on multiple fronts. His experience and versatility could still prove invaluable later in the season. Others will argue that if Slot does not see him as central to his plans, Liverpool should move decisively and free up wages and squad space for younger, more dynamic options.
January could become a defining moment. If Chiesa gets a run of games and shows his quality, he could re-establish himself as a key contributor. If not, a return to Serie A might be the best solution for both club and player. Whatever the outcome, Liverpool must avoid another drawn-out transfer saga that risks distracting from their title challenge.
