Local rivals Inter and AC Milan both suffered disappointing defeats on the final day of the Serie A season. Elsewhere, there were victories for Roma and Juventus ahead of their upcoming clash in the Coppa Italia final.
Here, we will round up all of the action from Serie A match-day 22.
Inter’s successful season ended in a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Como. Veronica Bernardi opened the scoring with her second goal of the Serie A season. Minutes later, Nadine Nischler raced onto Liucija Vaitukaitytė’s perfectly-weighted pass before she drove a low shot under Telma Ívarsdóttir. The Inter goalkeeper was then caught out for Como’s third, losing possession to Bernardi, who lofted a ball into the box for Nischler to head home her second of the game.
The result ended Inter’s six-game unbeaten league run, although they can still be pleased with a second-place finish and European qualification.
Ternana’s home meeting with AC Milan looked set to end in a goalless draw until Paloma Lázaro netted a 92nd-minute winner. After being sent through on goal by Lucia Pastrenge’s through ball, Lázaro produced the deftest of touches to steer it beyond the onrushing goalkeeper. The effort sealed Ternana’s first win since the middle of February, lifting them up to 10th spot and leaving Milan in sixth.
Champions Roma wrapped up a successful Serie A campaign with a 2-0 win over relegated Genoa. Giulia Dragoni’s second-half brace proved the difference in Saturday’s home contest. The 19-year-old broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, embarking on a driving run from deep before sliding the ball home with a neat left-foot finish. Just over 20 minutes later, Dragoni steered the ball in from Alayah Pilgrim’s square ball to take her tally to seven league goals for the season.
After securing three points, Roma finally got their hands on the Serie A trophy, making it a day of celebration at the Stadio Tre Fontane.
The champions will now turn their focus to their upcoming Coppa Italia final against Juventus, who finished their league campaign with a 3-1 away win over Parma. Emma Godo opened the scoring in the ninth minute, bending a low free-kick around the wall and in at the near post.
Annalise Rasmussen doubled Juventus’ advantage in the 70th minute, ten minutes before Parma’s Gaia Distefano reduced the deficit with an unstoppable effort from the edge of the box. However, the home side’s hopes of rescuing a point were quashed by Lindsey Thomas’s perfectly-weighted chip in the closing stages of the contest.
Elsewhere, Fiorentina rounded off the season with a narrow 2-1 victory over Lazio. Katla Tryggvadóttir scored her third goal of the season to send Fiorentina into the break with a 1-0 lead. Sofie Bredgaard then added a second with a stunning strike in the 74th minute. The Denmark international exchanged passes on the edge of the box before she drove inside from the left flank to rifle a fierce right-footed shot out of Francesca Durante’s reach. Fiorentina were denied a clean sheet by Nikola Karczewska’s 89th-minute effort, but it proved too little too late for a Lazio comeback.
Aurora De Rita required just four minutes to head Sassuolo in front in their away clash against Napoli. The hosts hit back in the second period through in-form forward Cecilie Fløe. The 24-year-old pounced on a defensive mix-up to prod the ball home. An offside flag initially curtailed celebrations, but the referee overturned the decision following a trip to the pitchside monitor. Napoli were unable to push on for a winner, ensuring they had to be content with a seventh-place finish.
Tessa Wullaert finished the campaign as the league’s top scorer. The Inter star scored 14 Serie A goals, two more than Roma’s Manuela Giugliano and three more than Napoli’s Fløe.
Bredgaard scored the standout goal of the weekend, producing a fierce strike with her weaker right foot to score in a third consecutive game.
Roma 2-0 Genoa
Inter 0-3 Como
Ternana 1-0 AC Milan
Napoli 1-1 Sassuolo
Parma 1-3 Juventus
Fiorentina 2-1 Lazio
