Verona slipped to the bottom of the Serie A standings after a 2-1 defeat at home against Parma on Sunday evening: A Mateo Pellegrino brace getting the better of Giovane’s second-half equaliser.
Verona were without Suslov, Serdar and Kastanos, while Parma travelled to the Bentegodi without Frigan, Circati, Estevez, Suzuki and Ndiaye.
The hosts started brightly, and had the ball in the back of the net through Gift Orban early on, but the Nigerian was adjudged to have been offside in the build-up and saw his goal ruled out. Orban dragged his next opportunity marginally wide of the post.
Though they had struggled to get into the game for most of the first half, Parma stole the lead against the run of play: Oliver Sorensen’s volley rattled off the crossbar from a long throw into the area, but Pellegrino was on hand to head home the rebound for 1-0.

Verona’s equaliser arrived, in comical fashion, shortly after the hour mark.
A battling Daniel Mosquera, who had come on just moments earlier, saw Verona break into the Parma half on the counter attack. The Colombian made his way into the area and squared to Giovane, whose attempted tap-in flicked upwards, hit him in the face and bounced into the back of the net for 1-1.

Giovane was involved again for the following goal, but unfortunately, it was Parma who ran away celebrating.
The Brazilian attempted to head back Lorenzo Montipo’s clearance to one of his teammates, but got far too much on it and played the ball straight into the path of Pellegrino, who was able to lift the ball over the Verona keeper with his first touch.
Sunday’s result lifts Parma up to 15th place in the Serie A table with 11 points from 12 matches, while Verona remain rooted to the bottom of the league table on six points, dropping below Fiorentina on goal difference.
