The aftermath of Sevilla’s defeat against Real Madrid was dominated not by tactics or missed chances, but by refereeing decisions that left Sevilla coach Matias Almeyda visibly frustrated.
Speaking after the match, the Argentine coach offered a raw and emotional assessment of the game, beginning with the incident that saw him sent off at half-time.
Almeyda explained that his dismissal came from what he felt was a simple and respectful complaint from the touchline.
“Someday we’ll have to ask the referees. I complained about a foul, and when they booked me. I asked why, only to be told I was sent off. Such arrogance is sad.”
Expanding on that moment, Almeyda insisted that his behaviour did not cross any line and suggested that modern refereeing offers enough tools to judge situations fairly.
He pointed to the availability of technology and witnesses, arguing that decisions should be backed by evidence rather than impulse. Addressing the situation further, he added,
“They have microphones. Every game we play, and I coach, the coaches complain. But when the complaint is made with respect, it’s valid in my opinion.
“This gentleman said he was tired of me talking about respect. I would like them to listen to the audio recordings, because otherwise it’s easy to dismiss people.
“There are witnesses. You always have to have them in life, I’ve learned that. I’m not going to make any statements. It’s on my conscience. I sleep peacefully,” added the coach.

Despite his clear anger, Almeyda attempted to place his reaction within the context of his career and values.
He made it clear that his comments were not driven by bitterness over the result, but by what he saw as a worrying lack of dialogue between officials and coaches.
Speaking candidly, he said, “I’m not a circus clown. I have a history in football. What happened today is ridiculous, I’m even embarrassed to have to say it.
“Nothing is going to change because I’m the coach of Sevilla. We’re the team with the most yellow cards. Men talk things out. Those who remain silent are traitors, and I’m no traitor.
“When this man’s lack of humility prevents cordial dialogue, we turn sport into authoritarianism. It hurts me a lot. I didn’t want to talk about this, but I’m forced to.
“Please, journalists, ask for the audio recordings. At some point, they are going to have to suspend a referee.
“I’ve never seen two penalties called in two minutes; it was very poorly refereed.
“I congratulate Madrid on their victory. I’m not saying they won because of that. There are the titles to prove it,” Almeyda continued.
