The Spanish footballing authorities have come down hard on Sevilla defender Marcao, following his sending off against Real Madrid. The Brazilian defender was dismissed in their final game of 2025 at the Santiago Bernabeu, and will not be seen again until February.
In the second half of their clash with Los Blancos, Marcao was late to a challenge while on a yellow card. Referee Alejandro Muniz was quickly on the scene to show him a second. Furious with the decision, Marcao confronted Muniz, and according to MD, called the official ‘Fillo da puta madre’ [Son of a f***ing b****] as he was on his way to the tunnel. He also kicked awat a ball in the process.
The Disciplinary Committee have responded with an equally strong sanction. Found in breach of La Liga regulations of ‘insulting, offending or confronting officials in an insulting manner or attitude’, he has been given a four-game suspension. He could have received as many as 12 games for doing so.

An extra game is added as a result of the sending off himself, and his booting away of the ball, interpreted as ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’, has earned Marcao a sixth game out. Sevilla do have the chance to appeal the ban, but given the guidelines, it seems unlikely that it will be successful.
The Brazilian defender will not be back again until the 15th of February, when Sevilla host Alaves. In the meantime, Los Nervionenses take on Levante (H), Celta Vigo (H), Elche (A), Athletic Club (H), RCD Mallorca (A) and Girona (H). It is a run that Matias Almeyda will hope to see his side make ground in the table, as they avoid any side in the top six. Almeyda will likely rely on Andres Castrin, Fabio Cardoso and potentially Nemanja Gudelj in his absence, although he will hope to get Cesar Azpilicueta back from injury too.
