Sheffield United completed an excellent January transfer window which saw them acquire seven new players to boost the squad depth in all areas of the pitch.
On deadline day, United brought in experienced Premier League campaigner Rob Holding as centre-back cover, 19-year-old speedy winger Christian Nwachukwu from the Bulgarian first division, and explosive forward Jefferson Caceres from the Peruvian league.
This deadline day trio adds to their business from earlier in the window: Harry Clarke (loan), Hamza Choudhury (loan-to-buy), Ben Brereton Diaz (loan-to-buy) and Tom Cannon (reported £10m fee).
Now, all eyes are on what the Blades can do in February as they look to take a huge leap forward towards promotion. Over the next few weeks, Chris Wilder’s men will host struggling Portsmouth (20th), Middlesbrough (7th), and Luton Town (23rd).
On paper, those look like two very winnable games as far bottom of the table Portsmouth and Luton are concerned. However, Boro can pose a serious threat to the Blades. United have only won once in their last five meetings, and ironically this came when Chris Wilder was the manager of Boro in a 4-1 thrashing at Bramall Lane.
Michael Carrick’s side play some pretty football and they’re always sharp in the middle and final third, as the Blades have seen in their last two games against Boro. But, despite losing by a goal to nil earlier on this season, United were mightily unlucky to not go ahead early in the game, which would’ve changed the course of the game.
Sheffield United will have the benefit of playing at home this time, and you can certainly expect a deafening atmosphere at the Lane, which Wilder’s Blades have thrived in across his two tenures.
Three victories in February would give United a huge confidence boost as they head into the blockbuster game against Yorkshire rivals, and promotion rivals, Leeds United at Bramall Lane, to close off the month of February.
Providing the Blades do the business in the next three games, a win against Leeds, under the beaming lights at Bramall Lane, could send Sheffield United top of the league with just a quarter of the season remaining.
Simply put, you do not want to miss these next few weeks as the Championship promotion race gets just that more serious. For those of you that want to see these hugely important games in the flesh, get your tickets to help cheer on Sheffield United.
