West Ham United are preparing to make their move for Sheffield United left-back Harrison Burrows, with an offer expected to arrive in the coming weeks, as per Alan Nixon.

Burrows only arrived at Bramall Lane from Peterborough United two years ago, for what was reportedly a fee of £2 million in add-ons and bonuses. But after two contrasting seasons in South Yorkshire, the 24-year-old has emerged as a genuine transfer target for the Hammers.

Should the transfer be completed, it would present Sheffield United with an intriguing dilemma. Burrows has shown enough quality to become an important squad member, yet the club may view a profitable sale as an opportunity to strengthen areas of greater need during the remainder of the transfer window.

Harrison Burrows’ Time At Sheffield United

Burrows’ first season in red and white was one that showcased exactly why Sheffield United recruited him from Peterborough United.

The attack-minded full-back featured 43 times during his debut campaign, scoring five goals while contributing three assists. His willingness to get forward, coupled with his exceptional left foot, quickly made him one of the Blades’ most dangerous creative outlets.

Whether it was delivering dangerous crosses into the penalty area, switching play with pinpoint long-range passes or threatening from set-pieces and distance, Burrows consistently demonstrated the technical qualities that had made him one of League One’s standout performers.

His second campaign, however, proved far less straightforward. Following the impressive form of Sam McCallum, Burrows found himself playing a reduced role for the start of the 2025/26 season. McCallum’s pace, power and defensive recovery speed offered Sheffield United a different profile at left-back, and this made him favoured by both Ruben Selles and Chris Wilder.

It appeared Burrows would spend the majority of the season as a rotational option before circumstances changed.

An injury suffered by McCallum opened the door for Burrows to return to the starting XI, and he took full advantage of the opportunity. By the end of the campaign he had made 30 starts, once again proving his attacking worth by scoring five goals and registering four assists.

Those numbers underline a key point about Burrows: regardless of whether he is a certain starter or competing for his place, he consistently contributes in the final third.

Few Sheffield United players have split opinion among supporters quite like Harrison Burrows. Those in favour point towards qualities that cannot easily be coached. His delivery from wide areas is among the best in the squad, his range of passing allows Sheffield United to switch play quickly, while his ability to strike the ball cleanly from distance provides an additional attacking weapon.

In possession, Burrows is calm, technically gifted and capable of unlocking stubborn defences. However, there remains one significant weakness that continues to divide opinion.

His lack of pace has regularly been exposed against quicker wingers. While Burrows reads the game well and generally positions himself intelligently, any slight lapse can leave him vulnerable in one-versus-one situations. Against opponents blessed with explosive speed, recovery runs are not his strongest attribute. That limitation has led many supporters to favour McCallum whenever both players are available.

McCallum’s outstanding athleticism allows him to recover defensive situations that Burrows simply cannot. His pace also gives Sheffield United another outlet during transitions, making him particularly effective against teams looking to counter-attack.

As a result, debate has continued throughout Burrows’ time at Bramall Lane over which player should be first choice.

Different Profiles, Strong Competition

Despite the differing opinions, Sheffield United have arguably benefited from possessing two left-backs with contrasting skill sets. McCallum offers speed, physicality and defensive security. Burrows brings technical quality, creativity and greater attacking output.

Rather than viewing the pair as direct replacements, many would argue they complement each other perfectly depending on the opposition or tactical approach. Against teams expected to sit deep, Burrows’ crossing and passing can become invaluable. Against quicker, more direct opponents, McCallum’s athleticism often provides additional protection.

Having two players capable of filling the same position while offering completely different strengths has been a luxury that many Championship clubs would envy.

Why Sheffield United Could Cash In

Although Burrows remains a valuable member of the squad, Sheffield United’s wider transfer strategy could ultimately determine his future. The Blades are still expected to strengthen multiple areas before the transfer window closes, with additional reinforcements required across the defence, midfield and attacking positions.

Selling Burrows for a profit would provide further flexibility within the club’s transfer budget while still leaving McCallum as an established first-choice option at left-back. Given this, the club may conclude that funds generated from Burrows’ departure could have a greater impact elsewhere across the squad.
