Sheffield United, Leicester City and Middlesbrough are in a three-way race for Luton Town’s Millenic Alli.
Sheffield United, Leicester City and Middlesbrough are in a three-way race for Luton Town’s Millenic Alli.
The 25-year-old forward joined the Hatters in January, and netted four times as Luton could not avoid relegation into Sky Bet League One.
Football Insider are reporting that Alli could yet remain in the second tier next season, with a trio of Championship clubs set to battle it out for his services after he was part of the relegated Luton outfit.
The Irishman joined from Exeter City, where he had scored 12 times in the first half of the campaign.
That followed four goals in 10 appearances for the Devon-based side in the prior term, after impressing enough to earn a move from Halifax Town of the National League.
It has been a quick rise up the divisions for Alli, who was playing in non-league as recently as the 2023/24 season. He has since played 35 League One games, and scored 13 goals in the process.
Alli is a left-sided attacker, but can operate in a central position. He started his career in the youth system at Bury, before moving around non-league clubs.
He went on to have spells at clubs including South Shields, Workington, Ashton United, Stockport County, and Chorley before switching to Halifax.
At the Shaymen he won the 2022/23 FA Trophy, making a name for himself in front of goal before moving up the English football pyramid to Exeter.
Both Sheffield United and Middlesbrough have new managers ahead of the 2025/26 term, while Leicester City are said to be looking for their own with rumours swirling over the potential removal of former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The Blades have recently recruited Ruben Selles after Chris Wilder departed the club by mutual consent. The move came in the wake of the play-off final defeat to Sunderland, where a late goal snatched a chance at immediate promotion back into the Premier League away from United.
Middlesbrough dismissed Michael Carrick after a disappointing season left them outside of the play-offs, with former Luton boss Rob Edwards announced as his replacement.
Alli was signed by Luton under Matt Bloomfield, who replaced Edwards during what was a busy January transfer window for the club.
After consecutive relegations for Town, they could now lose one of their most promising attacking options as a number of top Championship clubs signal interest.
Leicester return to the Championship after being shunted from the top-flight in convincing fashion, alongside Southampton and Ipswich Town, and will be one of the favourites for promotion. Ex-Everton and Burnley gaffer Sean Dyche is heavily linked with the role.
It is clear to see that Dublin-born forward Alli has no shortage of potential suitors in the upper echelons of the second-tier, while he may remain at Luton and play his part in what will be a push for a quick return to the Championship.
