Sheffield United have called time on Ruben Selles after five league matches
Sheffield United have reportedly sacked manager Ruben Selles.
The Blades have made a disastrous start to the season, losing the first five games of a Football League campaign for just the second time in their history.
A 5-0 hammering away at Ipswich Town looks to have been the final straw for Selles’ job security, with the Sheffield United bosses deciding to cut their losses.
Selles was appointed as Sheffield United manager early in the summer, following the decision to part ways with Chris Wilder.
However, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke via X, the Blades have sacked the 42-year-old after just five league matches.
The Steel City side have scored just one Championship goal after 450 minutes of action, which came in their 4-1 home embarrassment against Bristol City.
Further defeats at the hands of Swansea City, Millwall, Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town followed, leaving United rooted to the bottom of the second-tier standings.
They also exited the EFL Cup at the earliest opportunity, bested by Birmingham City, to compound the 42-year-old's woes.
Sheffield United have already begun sounding out potential replacements as they look to recover from their nightmare spell under Selles.
The Sheffield Star revealed that the Blades have explored a Chris Wilder return just months after deciding that he wasn’t the man to lead their project forward.
Journalist Alan Nixon has also stated via his Patreon channel that experienced EFL boss Tony Mowbray is also a candidate to take over at Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United finished the 2024/25 Championship campaign third in the table with 90 points, becoming just the second side in the division’s history to achieve that total and not get automatically promoted.
The play-offs bring their own sense of unpredictability and ultimately, despite proving to be the better side for large portions of the match, United were defeated by Sunderland at Wembley.
Wilder was subsequently dismissed, which raised eyebrows. Further questions arose when Selles was appointed as his replacement, due to the fact that he had just nearly suffered relegation with Hull City.
That poor form has unfortunately translated to the Steel City. Slow, lethargic and uninspired performances have seen Sheffield United look a shadow of last season’s side.
A lack of creativity and fight, with no direction or purpose, have allowed teams to run all over them during the opening stages of the campaign.
Ipswich Town’s 5-0 humbling of the Blades signalled a point of no return for Selles, and the writing seemed to be on the wall when the full-time whistle blew.
