Sheffield United were left with contrasting emotions on Tuesday night after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to a depleted and out-of-form Norwich City.
United made a bright start and carved out several first-half opportunities, though they also survived a major scare midway through the opening period. Michael Cooper was beaten by a looping Josh Sargent header, only for Danny Ings to provide a crucial goal-line clearance that kept the scores level.
Harrison Burrows, influential from set-pieces, forced a superb fingertip stop from the Norwich goalkeeper with a dipping free-kick. From the resulting corner, the Blades should have taken the lead: Ings found himself unmarked at the back post but headed over with the keeper stranded. Moments before half-time, he volleyed over from a Tahith Chong cross as the pressure steadily mounted.
That pressure finally told in the second half. Chong, who had been bright throughout, delivered a neat low ball into the six-yard box, and Ings reacted quickest to turn home from close range.
But the Blades’ advantage didn’t last. On 65 minutes, chaos in the box allowed Norwich back into the contest. United failed to clear their lines on multiple occasions before an effort took a cruel deflection off Djibril Soumaré and trickled over the line to ensure a share of the spoils.

Danny Ings spoke to SUTV after the match, acknowledging both his relief at finally scoring and his frustration at the opportunities he missed.
“Big relief, felt like it wasn’t going to come again,” he admitted. “I’ve been so close in previous games, including two offside goals. But when it went in the back of the net I was phewing and actually apologised to the fans, because there were a couple of chances I should have put away in the first half.”
Ings also explained the slow start to his United career: “When I signed, I’d not had a pre-season and I pulled my hamstring in the first week, so I’ve had to be patient. But with games I’ve felt sharper and sharper.”
While United will rue the missed opportunity to capitalise on a weakened Norwich side, their unbeaten six-game run offers encouragement as the fixtures come thick and fast over the festive period. The Blades travel to mid-table West Bromwich Albion on Friday night to face a side that have leaked eight goals in their last three matches.
