All the latest news surrounding Sheffield United

Sheffield United are set to begin their third straight season in the Championship in 2026/27, marking the longest they've stayed in the second tier since their four-year stint between 2007 and 2011.

Their 13th-placed finish this season marked their lowest finish in the pyramid since they won League One in 2017, and with no Premier League parachute payments incoming, there'll be a greater struggle to continue to be one of the top Championship sides.

There have been plenty of occasions where a former top-flight side has faded away into the congested middle pack in the second tier, and the onus is on Chris Wilder and the higher-ups at Bramall Lane to lead the club back to the promised land.

Because of that, there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding what the Sheffield United squad will look like, with a refresh of playing personnel needed.

It's expected to be pretty busy on the red side of South Yorkshire this summer, and with that in mind, here's the latest on what's happening with Sheffield United.

First summer transfer targets touted for Sheffield United

There's expected to be a big reshuffle in the playing squad at Sheffield United this summer. Despite not releasing their retained list as of writing just yet, Tom Davies, Danny Ings and Ben Mee have all announced that they're leaving the club at the end of their contracts.

Plenty of other stars will leave in the coming months, meaning there'll be some excitement over who will be replacing them, as Chris Wilder aims to build a more competitive squad than the one he inherited last September.

Football Insider has reported that Hearts midfielder Marc Leonard is on Wilder's radar, having been in attendance for the SPL leader's win over Rangers earlier this month.

Leonard is on loan from fellow Championship side Birmingham City, but with him being allowed to leave in January, plus the fact that the Blues will likely upgrade their midfield in the 23-year-old's absence, his future at St Andrew's looks short-lived, and his performances at the heart of the Hearts midfield will no doubt attract interest.

Alongside the Tynecastle-based side looking to secure a permanent deal, Celtic and Sheffield United are in a battle to try and secure his signature this summer.

Additionally, the Blades have singled out Jack Clarke as a potential marquee signing this summer, with the hope being that Ipswich Town's promotion to the Premier League could open the door for an exit, even if the 25-year-old scored a team-high 16 goals.

When Jaden Philogene was fit, though, Clarke found himself as an impact option off the bench, and perhaps a switch to a side where he'll be one of the focal attacking points could be of interest, even if it means remaining in the Championship.

Sheffield United have plenty of contract decisions to make this summer, including Tyrese Campbell

The calibre of players who are entering the final year of their deals at Sheffield United is rather interesting, and it means that the Blades will have plenty of decisions to make, especially if they are unable to tie them down to longer deals.

It's well-known that Sheffield United don't like to see players leave for nothing at the end of their deals. The likes of Sander Berge, Iliman Ndiaye, and, more recently, Anel Ahmedhodzic have all been cashed in on with less than a year remaining on their contracts.

The likes of Gustavo Hamer, Andre Brooks and Femi Seriki, all important players for Chris Wilder since his return, see their contracts end in 2027, and you'd expect that, in an ideal world, all three will extend their stays.

But what about Tyrese Campbell, who has seen his stock fall over the course of the season?

The 26-year-old had an unremarkable 2025/26 campaign, scoring just six times in 34 appearances and falling out of favour in 2026 as Patrick Bamford started to nail down the starting striker spot.

The Sheffield Star has reported that Celtic and Rangers have prior links with Campbell, so perhaps the Blades will look to cash in if an appropriate offer comes through.

Callum O'Hare outlines future plans with Sheffield United

One player who Sheffield United don't have to worry about losing this summer, though, is Callum O'Hare. Not because he is not coming to the end of his contract, which is also the case, but because he wants to stay and be part of the rebuild at Bramall Lane.

Among the carnage at Sheffield United this season, O'Hare had a much-improved campaign in his second year at the club, contributing more goals than he has in any other year, ending the term with nine goals and seven assists.

Understandably, that helped him pick up numerous awards at the end-of-season ceremony, and he's looking forward to kicking on further in his third season at the club.

"I've found it really good here," he told the Sheffield Star.

"Since I've been here, I've really enjoyed it. So, of course, I'd like to continue that. Hopefully, we can build again next year and see what happens."

Ahead of a summer where a lot is forecast to change at Bramall Lane, it'll be nice to know that one of Sheffield United's better players this term is keen to try and get the club back into the Premier League.
