Sheffield United have held talks with former forward Oli McBurnie about a potential return to Bramall Lane.

According to The Star, the Scotland international could come back to the club after his departure from Las Palmas earlier in the summer.

The 29-year-old previously spent five seasons with the Yorkshire outfit prior to his move to Spain in 2024.

McBurnie contributed three goals and six assists from 34 appearances in La Liga last season, with Las Palmas suffering relegation with a 19th-place finish.

When asked about the prospect of McBurnie returning to the club, FLW’s Sheffield United fan pundit Jimmy, from Blades Ramble, claimed he could be an ideal replacement for Kieffer Moore, should he depart Bramall Lane this summer.

He believes that McBurnie would be a sensible option to become the third-choice striker in Ruben Selles’ team given he’d be signed as a free agent, and he already knows the club well.

“I think McBurnie signing makes sense,” Jimmy told Football League World.

“If Kieffer Moore is to go, which is rumoured he may well do, we spent £10 million on Tom Cannon, and Ty Campbell has been our number one striker last season.

“So it will be between those two, Cannon and Campbell, for the sole striking starting spot.

“So, to complement that we had Kieffer Moore, who gives us a bit of something different, but we’re not going to go into the market and spend another £10 million on someone who will keep out our £10 million striker.

“It is sensible for us to go into the market and pick up a free transfer.

“Oli McBurnie is experienced, knows the club, good character around the club, well-liked by the majority of the fanbase.

“Now with no pressure of a huge fee around his neck, he could just enjoy his football, and wouldn't be expected to be our starting striker.

“I think it’s a sensible bit of business if Oli McBurnie comes back.”

Sheffield United will begin their league campaign on 9 August with a home clash against Bristol City.

McBurnie signing to replace Moore makes a lot of sense

Sheffield United have Moore, Campbell and Cannon to choose from already, but if Moore departs then McBurnie would be a smart replacement option.

He’d be a relatively cheap signing to get done given no transfer fee would be involved, and he’d provide some cover in case of injuries.

McBurnie may have some reservations over potential game time, which could prove a stumbling block to completing a deal.
