Sheffield United have handed more experienced operators an opportunity to train with them
Sheffield United have handed trials to Danny Ings and Nathan Redmond with a view towards signing the experienced ex-England international duo permanently.
The Blades have been the Championship’s early shock this season, losing all three of their opening matches, which leaves them currently sitting bottom of the second tier table.
Ruben Selles and co have therefore turned to the transfer market to try and rectify their issues, and with a number of defensive additions confirmed and also rumoured, attentions are also turning to the final third, with two potential free transfers incoming.
Sheffield United seem to be keen to add experience to their ranks in the final stages of the summer window, having recently given Ben Mee the opportunity to train with them, with the prospect of signing the defender permanently.
According to the Sheffield Star, the Blades are repeating that process with Ings and Redmond. The duo are currently free agents and have been welcomed to train with the Steel City side, having departed West Ham and Burnley respectively.
Like Mee, both players can earn a permanent deal at Bramall Lane if they impress Selles in the coming weeks. The United manager has previously worked with the pair during his time with Southampton, so he will already be well aware of the quality they possess.
Due to the fact that Ings and Redmond are free agents, they can be signed at any point, so Sheffield United won’t feel pressured to make a decision before the transfer deadline on September 1.
The duo have both represented the England national team, albeit they were only capped four times between the pair, and competed in the Premier League for a combined 20 years - crucial experience that the Blades will be keen to harness this season.
Sheffield United have already signed Nils Zätterström, Djibril Soumaré, Ben Godfrey, Louie Barry and Tyler Bindon this summer, to add to their first-team squad, and are in the process of completing deals for Japhet Tanganga and Seol Young-woo too - they could be joined by Redmond and Ings if they impress in training.
After such a devastating start to the 2025/26 Championship campaign, it would be easy for Sheffield United to panic and rush into risky signings.
The Blades entered the season tipped to be one of the promotion favourites, after coming so close to finishing in the top two last term.
However, they mustn’t let emotion interfere with their decision-making when it comes to Ings and Redmond.
Although they have both proven to have top-flight quality over the years, the duo have struggled with injuries and represents a significant risk.
It isn’t likely that the pair will settle for modest wages and if they spend a significant amount of time in the treatment room, the signings could turn into a nightmare for Selles if he decides to bring both into the fold at Bramall Lane.
