Sheffield United will face Sunderland on 24 May for a place in the Premier League next season

Sunderland earned their place in the play-off final on Tuesday night in dramatic fashion and will face Sheffield United at Wembley Stadium later this month.

A 123rd-minute header from Dan Ballard sealed victory for Régis Le Bris’ side over Coventry City, putting them one game away from the Premier League.

However, the Blades stand in their way and will come into the final off the back of a 6-0 aggregate win over Bristol City.

The two sides will meet on Saturday 24th May in London for a place in the top flight, with Chris Wilder’s team looking for an immediate return, while Sunderland have been out of the division since 2017.

Here we take a look at when supporters of both teams will discover the kick-off time for the Wembley fixture…

Championship play-off final kick-off time

It has been reported by The Northern Echo that the EFL are hoping to confirm the kick-off time for the play-off final in the coming days.

However, discussions reportedly first need to be held between the various interested parties before any official time can be given.

It’s believed that work is being done to ensure it is communicated with supporters of both clubs as quickly as possible, as they understand travel plans need to be arranged.

But first talks must be held with safety groups, as well as the police, broadcasters and the clubs themselves.

It’s been claimed that the relevant decision-makers were waiting until both participants in the fixture were decided before making any official calls.

Last year’s final between Southampton and Leeds United took place in a 3pm kick-off, with the Saints coming out victorious with a 1-0 win to book their place back in the Premier League.

However, it remains unclear whether the upcoming final will take place at the same time, or if it will be moved.

Sunderland and Sheffield United’s play-off history

Sheffield United won both legs of their semi-final tie with Bristol City 3-0 to emphatically earn a place in the play-off final.

Wilder will be looking to end a horrendous run of nine play-off appearances in a row without gaining promotion for the Yorkshire outfit.

The Blades finished third in the Championship, missing out on automatic promotion by 10 points.

The new Sheffield United owners will be hoping that a place in the top flight will be secured as they prepare for their first summer transfer window while in control at Bramall Lane.

Meanwhile, Sunderland are aiming to make a return to the division for the first time since their 2017 relegation under David Moyes.

The Black Cats are in their third season back in the Championship after also suffering relegation to League One in 2018.

Le Bris took charge of the first-team squad last summer after a disappointing 16th place finish in 2024, and guided them to a fourth-place finish.

Sunderland earned a place in the play-offs as recently as 2023, with Tony Mowbray’s side losing their semi-final to eventual winners Luton Town.

Sheffield United’s last play-off appearance came in 2022, where they also lost in the semi-finals, with Nottingham Forest going on to earn promotion after beating Paul Heckingbottom’s team on penalties.
