Ibrahim Cissoko is a player of interest to the Owls

Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly joined the chase to sign current Plymouth Argyle loanee winger Ibrahim Cissoko, amid rumours that his spell at Home Park is set to be cut short by parent club Toulouse to join another Championship club.

Wednesday have been quiet on the transfer front so far this month, with ex-Southampton attacking midfielder Stuart Armstrong's recent arrival marking their first signing of the January window, following the saga between boss Danny Rohl and owner Dejphon Chansiri a few weeks ago.

The public dispute between the pair looks to have been quashed in weeks gone by, and the Owls have since moved on to try and bring in some fresh faces this month as they aim to keep up in the race for the play-off places.

Wednesday will be pleased that their season has not turned out like Plymouth's so far, with Miron Muslic's men currently sat bottom of the league table. Toulouse loanee Cissoko was a shining light for the Greens in the early stages of the season, yet has struggled for game-time and form over recent months.

The Dutchman looks set to cut his spell at Home Park short before the end of the window, and with Blackburn Rovers linked with a move, Wednesday now look to have also registered their interest in his signature.

Cissoko was a standout in a poor Argyle team under Wayne Rooney at the start of the season, but he was disrupted by a groin injury for two months from October to December, and has since found minutes hard to come by under new boss Muslic.

Toulouse are now poised to recall him from his spell at Plymouth and then allow him back out on loan, and Blackburn have been reported to be interested in a move, but the Pilgrims' head-coach remained coy over his loan man's future at the club in his press conference yesterday.

However, to add to Rovers' interest, The Star have now claimed that Sheffield Wednesday want to bring the 21-year-old to Hillsborough in the coming days, with a loan move until the end of the season the most likely deal to be struck.

Cissoko would be an ideal addition if Danny Rohl can get him firing again

Owls boss Rohl has previously spoken of his desire for the club to sign "high impact" players this month, and there is no doubt that Cissoko can affect games at this level when he is full of confidence and has the backing of his respective manager.

Rohl provided an update on the club's current transfer dealings in his pre-match press conference today, and a player like the Toulouse man certainly fits the bill regarding what he wants to add to his squad right now.

"Of course the advantage for UK players is that they know the league," he said, via the Yorkshire Post.

“Especially with signings in January, if you take players from other countries and they do not have Championship experience (it) can take them a little bit more time. You have to think about what can be really helpful in the short-term and what could be long-term."

Cissoko not only has the potential to be an asset in the Championship play-off race, but he also has that vital experience of playing in the league already, which could make him a valuable addition if a deal is viable for Wednesday.

The 21-year-old was a coup for the Greens in the summer, given his experience in the Eredivisie with NEC, and in Ligue 1 and the Europa League with Toulouse last season, and it did not take much time for him to settle into his new surroundings as he netted his first goal for the club to open the scoring against Hull City in their first Championship outing of the season at Home Park.

He can be forgiven for a short spell without a goal contribution, despite starting the next four league games, as his performance off the bench against Luton Town on September 27 proved his quality once more, with two well-taken second-half strikes earning Rooney's side a vital 3-1 win.

His time with Argyle has since been derailed by that injury that saw him sidelined for two months, and Muslic has seemingly not taken to him how Rooney did, with the 21-year-old making just three appearances off the bench in the last six games.

Despite his recent struggles, the fact the likes of Blackburn and Wednesday are interested in his services should highlight how well-regarded he is in the Championship after his great start, and he would be a smart signing for the Owls, given boss Rohl's track-record of getting the best out of his players.
