Pierce Charles’ future at Sheffield Wednesday remains the subject of speculation amid uncertainty surrounding the ownership.

It was reported in the summer that West Ham and Rangers both had bids rejected by the Owls for the goalkeeper, who has broken into the first team squad in the last year.

Charles played in the final eight games of the previous campaign, as well as the first two fixtures this season, before sustaining an injury issue.

However, he is still likely to attract interest going into January, particularly with the Yorkshire outfit’s financial issues remaining a key problem behind the scenes.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri is being put under immense pressure to sell his stake in the club following his mismanagement of their finances.

When asked if Charles will be sold in January and, if so, for how much, FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna claimed that it will depend on whether Chansiri is still the owner.

He believes the Thai businessman will want to bring cash in if he is still at the club, and that a cut rate price of £1 to 2 million might be enough to seal a deal for the 20-year-old.

“The answer to this very much rests on who owns the club come January,” McKenna told Football League World.

“If Chansiri’s reign of terror continues, I certainly think he will look to sell Pierce Charles.

“I don’t have any doubt in that regard because he will look to sell him to get some money in to enable him to cling on to the club even longer.

“This happened in the summer with the likes of [Djeidi] Gassama and [Anthony] Musaba, and unfortunately I could see Chansiri selling him for a cut-price because he just wants quick money in.

“He will have no business knowledge or sense that he needs to be sold further down the line for a higher price. Chansiri will want the money then.

“Especially with a much lower take up on early-season tickets.

“So, I suppose I’m saying Chansiri will sell for too little. I could see him selling for £1 to 2 million when we have to push for much higher and not be pushed over by these Premier League clubs.”

However, McKenna believes that Sheffield Wednesday should be able to command a fee closer to £10 million for the player, and that a sale is far less likely if the club’s ownership changes before January: “Why shouldn’t we say ‘£10 million or don’t bother coming to talk to us’? Because Pierce Charles is going to be worth about more than £10 million in the future.

“Why should we again lose out to the bad ownership? I think if Chansiri is gone by January, he will certainly be staying at the club, and he’ll be developed further as our keeper.

“So I’m just hoping it’s a scenario in January with Chansiri gone and Charles stays as our player, gains more experience and, when the time comes for him to move on, we get a high price for him.”

Cut-price for Pierce Charles would hurt Sheffield Wednesday

A cut rate price for Charles does seem likely if Chansiri is still running the club by the time the January window opens.

The goalkeeper is earning good experience with the Owls now, and playing regular first team minutes at the age of 20 will be hard to get at clubs like Rangers or West Ham.

Charles should be keen to remain at Hillsborough provided he remains ahead of Ethan Horvath in the pecking order once he returns from injury.

A new owner could really prove to the fans that they’re bringing Sheffield Wednesday forward by taking a firm stance on Charles remaining, but first someone actually has to buy the team from Chansiri, and it remains to be seen whether that will actually come to fruition in time for the start of 2026.
