FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit isn't too keen on the links to Kyreece Lisbie

After 12 months of emergency loan signings and free transfers, there's a lot to do at Sheffield Wednesday to bulk out the squad ahead of their League One return.

The Owls will be hoping for some exciting news regarding incomings over the coming weeks, with the transfer window kicking off with the confirmation that former Stockport County Director of Football and Chief Exec, Simon Wilson, is the new Sporting Director at Hillsborough.

Now, a clear long-term strategy can be implemented at the club, something that former owner Dejphon Chansiri didn't believe in, and with that will come a range of arrivals, from those who can make an immediate impact to those who will be set to help bolster the squad and contribute where necessary.

Football League World exclusively revealed on Tuesday that the Owls are looking at Colchester United winger Kyreece Lisbie as one of their first signings of the new era, off the back of the 22-year-old's breakout season in the EFL, playing 51 times in all competitions, scoring 11 and assisting eight.

Wednesday are set to battle with fellow recently-relegated side Oxford United and the ever-ambitious Huddersfield Town for his signature, which indicates he is highly-rated in League One circles.

However, with the likes of Barry Bannan and Jamie Vardy being names thrown around who could find their way to Hillsborough this summer, some Owls fans aren't exactly too enthusiastic about a winger who has just one season of fourth-tier football under his belt.

Patrick McKenna, FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, shares those feelings, but does admit that not every signing this summer will see a blockbuster name or someone with plenty of League One experience come through the door.

"I don't think Kyreece Lisbie would be a particularly exciting signing, but it is a squad game," he said.

"With him being 22 years old, it's possible we can develop him further. Since he's only played at League Two level, he hasn't had a stellar career, but you never know; could he step up to League One? I suppose we'd only find out next season."

Do you think Kyreece Lisbie would be a good signing for Sheffield Wednesday this summer? Let us know in the comments.

While there's a clear upside in Lisbie in that he could definitely prove to be a top third-tier operator and force himself to be a key player in a promotion-chasing side, McKenna isn't too keen on taking that chance.

The fan pundit would prefer to see more established names in the starting eleven at Hillsborough next season, with the likes of Lisbie serving mainly as backups to help bulk out the squad ahead of a long campaign.

"He'd be more of a squad filler, rather than an exciting addition, but we do need a bigger squad," he continued.

"I'm not entirely excited about it, but we do need to be active in this transfer window. Maybe this is the sort of signing we'd make first."

Sheffield Wednesday will need to trust in their recruitment strategy this summer

Understandably, Sheffield Wednesday fans are still getting used to the idea that there's a clear long-term strategy being outlined at Hillsborough now that Simon Wilson is through the door.

Dejphon Chansiri opted not to utilise a sporting director at all during his decade spell as the Wednesday owner, so there's perhaps a little bit of apprehension amongst the Owls fanbase, especially when one of their first targets seems to be someone in League Two.

However, that's not to say that the recruitment model will follow this trend wholeheartedly. As McKenna alluded to, Wednesday needs a lot of new faces, with the remaining contracted players made up of veterans or youngsters whose only first-team experience came during the difficult season just gone.

And if they are to do some shopping in League Two, they may as well have their eyes on one of the brightest prospects with one of the higher personal ceilings in the division.

If the new-look board can get the perfect mix of budding stars from lower leagues and established names ready to hit the ground running in the third tier, Sheffield Wednesday will still be among those who could achieve promotion, and those in the stands at Hillsborough will have to trust them in striking that balance.
