Sheffield Wednesday’s fan pundit has spoken to FLW about Max Lowe being linked with a move to Championship rivals Preston North End.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
It’s conflicting feelings for Sheffield Wednesday supporters both on and off the pitch.
It was recently revealed that the Owls owe £4 million worth of debts over the last two months, casting further doubt over the future of longstanding owner Dejphon Chansiri as a takeover nears.
Meanwhile, Danny Rohl has returned to Yorkshire to manage Wednesday after a summer of pushing for a move away from the club. The German is expected to take training with the playing squad, according to journalist Rob Staton.
With the worrying financial issues surrounding the club, the Owls have sanctioned multiple departures, with the most notable and recent one being Anthony Musaba to Turkish outfit Samsonspor, while Djeidi Gassama’s move to Rangers is still in the pipeline.
Now another key first-team figure has been linked with a Sheffield Wednesday exit, as a report from Alan Nixon details that defender Max Lowe could strike a reunion with Paul Heckingbottom at Preston North End.
With this news in mind, FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit has weighed in with his thoughts over the latest transfer speculation.
Speaking to Football League World, Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna has advised the Owls to keep hold of Max Lowe this summer after he made steady improvements in a Wednesday shirt over the course of last term.
Patrick said: “In regards to Max Lowe, I think with us selling players, we really shouldn’t be looking to do so at the minute.
“The loss of Gassama and Musaba has taken the numbers down on an already thin squad, so even if there is a takeover, we don’t know when that may be, and there’s still embargoes, so I want to be keeping the squad size up, but if we were in a situation where there are no embargoes are anything like that, I’d still want to keep him.
“When he came last season, he did struggle in his first few months. He looked quite shaky, was prone to mistakes and was struggling to find his way into the side, but I really think as the season went on, we’ve seen a consistent improvement from Max Lowe where it became a situation that he was one of the first names on the team sheet.
“So, no, we should be looking to keep him and have him as one of our key players next season and I do think that if we have some sort of normality on the pitch next season and around the club, Max Lowe could improve it even further, and he’ll be a key player for us next season.”
As Sheffield Wednesday continue to be hurt by financial woe, the easy solution would be to sign off another sale in order to keep the coffers boosted.
However, on the pitch, Wednesday would be impacted heavily by this exit.
Lowe is the only recognised left-back option at the club after Marvin Johnson departed at the end of last season, and with the club unable to recruit, someone would have to step up and play in a position that is unknown to them.
That gamble may be able to work down the lower ends of the EFL pyramid, but that would be playing with fire in the Championship, with the Owls having the potential to concede a significant number of chances and goals from having such inexperience in the full-back position.
Meanwhile, Lowe blossomed into a dependable and quality option at second tier level after a forgettable opening period at Hillsborough, with his versatility to play either left-back or in central defence a big help to Danny Rohl.
Wednesday need Championship experience more than ever to dig themselves out of the hole they currently find themselves in, and with Lowe amassing 121 appearances in the second tier, he could play a fundamental part in keeping the club in the Championship amid all the uncertainty.
