Phil Parkinson's side were promoted from League One alongside Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic last term, with the ascent being their third in as many years under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

With the Championship itself proving incredibly tight this season, Wrexham find themselves in and around the race for play-offs, with just a point separating them in ninth, and Watford in sixth, while the automatic promotion places are just six points away.

With the January transfer window coming in good time to provide reinforcements, Wrexham aren't looking to stand still, with journalist Alan Nixon dropping a recent bombshell that will keep clubs across the division on high alert.

Alan Nixon reports that the club have made a "hush-hush" approach for an unnamed striker, with the mentioned deal valued at around £14 million - a fee that would smash Wrexham's transfer record of £7.5 million.

With the Hollywood duo in charge, the Welsh club boasts a level of ambition and financial backing that could be described as unheard of for multiple clubs across the division, who will continue to keep a close eye on the serious ambition that continues to be shown by Wrexham.

Wrexham would spend around £33 million over the summer, with the club looking to settle down in the Championship after an incredible rise. Though now, with the club potentially taking part in a promotion race, the level of ambition has once again been raised.

Wrexham mean business - Championship clubs will be on high alert

The simple fact of the matter is that Wrexham have arrived in the second tier with a budget incomparable to large sections of the division.

The club do not have to act as diligently and as prudently as others, particularly the likes of Derby County, Portsmouth and Oxford - who were promoted to the Championship a year before Wrexham.

Over the summer, Wrexham added proven Championship quality to improve what was already a squad full of quality. The likes of Kieffer Moore, Conor Coady, Nathan Broadhead, Ben Sheaf and more all made the switch to North Wales last calendar year.

The names themselves pointed in the direction of the current campaign being somewhat of a transitional one, with the main goal being to settle down in the second tier after three successive promotions. Though the circumstances have changed.

Wrexham find themselves within touching distance of the play-offs, with potentially favourable home clashes against Norwich and Leicester coming up, and while the £14 million bagsman remains unnamed, it does point in the direction of Wrexham aiming for a possible quicker ascent than what would have been expected.

The club's spending and pulling power has raised eyebrows throughout Reynolds and McElhenney's time in charge, and a £14 million January outlay would certainly worry the rest of the division heading into the season's crunch point.
