Former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka is closing in on a surprise return to the Premier League following a two-year absence. The Switzerland international spent seven seasons with the Gunners, making close to 300 appearances in all competitions. Arsenal signed Xhaka from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2016 for approximately £30 million. He departed in 2023 after playing a pivotal role in Arsenal’s return to the Champions League.
Following his strong 2022-23 campaign, Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen secured the midfielder for €25 million. Just two years on, Xhaka is set to make his Premier League comeback.
According to Sky Sports, Sunderland have reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Xhaka for £17 million, which is £7 million more than their initial bid. The Black Cats reportedly agreed personal terms with the 31-year-old last week. He was expected to undergo a medical on 28th July, before signing a three-year contract with the newly-promoted Premier League side.
His move follows a successful spell in Germany. Under Xabi Alonso, Xhaka was a key figure in a record-breaking Leverkusen side that went 51 games unbeaten and won their first-ever Bundesliga title. Across two seasons, he made 99 appearances, scored six goals and contributed nine assists from a deep-lying midfield role.

Xhaka’s arrival at Sunderland will bring invaluable experience to Regis Le Bris’ midfield as they gear up for a demanding top-flight campaign. With 137 international caps for Switzerland, his leadership and game management could prove essential in keeping Sunderland competitive.
From Arsenal’s perspective, the Premier League will be welcoming back a former captain and one of the club’s most polarising figures. Though opinions on him remain divided among the fanbase, there is no doubt he matured into a dependable presence under Mikel Arteta. Most Gooners will surely wish him well in his next chapter.
