Lauren James says England “showed the world what we can do” with a thumping win over the Netherlands.
England got the defence of their European crown back on track on Wednesday evening thanks to a 4-0 win against Andries Jonker’s side.
Lauren James opened the scoring and struck in the second half, too, while Ella Toone and Georgia Stanway also found the net.
The victory was a vital one for the Lionesses, who lost their opening Group D game of Euro 2025 to France, but they will now be optimistic about making the knockout stages when they face Wales on Saturday.
“I enjoyed it a lot,” James told the BBC. “I think the goals say it all.
“We bounced back, obviously, from our previous game and today we showed that we are more than capable of showing the world what we can do.
“As long as I am helping the team in whatever way I can, whether that is providing or scoring, I just try to do my best each game. Hopefully, as the games go on, I keep getting more involved.”
England were under pressure going into their clash with the Dutch, who won their opening game against Wales 3-0.
Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman praised the way her side bounced back from their defeat to France and for the unity they showed in the build-up to this win over the Netherlands.
“The response of the team after the France game [impressed me most],” said Wiegman.
“How we came together, how we played on the pitch and, of course, I’m very happy with the score because that’s a massive help, because goal difference can make the difference.
“How we played, but also the days into this game, how we came together, how we looked in each other's eyes and said: ‘Ok, what do we need to do?’
“And execution of the game plan, I think that really helped. I thought the Netherlands were struggling to keep up to the level. We just did really well. I’m really proud of the team. We aren’t there yet but this is an incredible response.
“I did not expect [to win] 4-0, absolutely not. It is all very good tonight.”
