Frank Lampard has been linked with potentially taking over at Crystal Palace

Simon Jordan has claimed that he’d be surprised if Frank Lampard made the switch from Coventry City to Crystal Palace if the club are promoted to the Premier League.

It was reported earlier this week by Talksport that the Eagles have shortlisted the 47-year-old as a potential option to replace Oliver Glasner.

Lampard has been in charge at the CBS Arena since November 2024, and has already overseen a fifth place finish in the Championship table.

And now the Sky Blues are aiming to earn automatic promotion to the top flight, targeting a return to the division for the first time since 2001.

But the London outfit are on the look out for a new head coach after Glasner already confirmed that he will not be renewing his contract, which is set to expire in the summer.

Jordan has questioned whether Lampard is ready to make the step back up to the Premier League with a club like Crystal Palace, having previously managed Chelsea and Everton at that level.

He believes that Coventry have supported his return to management after his difficult spells in the top flight, and that this support has been as crucial to their rise to a promotion challenge as Lampard’s own work as head coach.

“Frank hasn’t proved himself as a Premier League manager so the answer to Palace’s problems may not be necessarily Frank Lampard because he hasn’t proved himself,” said Jordan, via Talksport.

“The fact that he can manage in the Championship; yeah, he’s done well previously.

“Derby got to the play-off final, didn’t win it. So he’s got to a certain level.

“I think that Coventry would have a reasonable shout to suggest that he was given a reasonable opportunity to come back into a reasonable job.

“The fact that he does a good job and gets them promoted wouldn’t be in isolation.

“He would have been supported in that respect and backed to do it.”

But he has claimed that Lampard wouldn’t make the move away from Coventry for Palace, if he was able to get the club promoted, particularly given the lack of support that Glasner has felt while at Selhurst Park.

“I don’t know, Lampard doesn’t strike me as the sort of person that would take that sort of investment into him lightly,” he continued.

“But I would be surprised if Lampard got Coventry promoted, which odds are, he will, and then suddenly decides that for a club that Oliver Glasner suggested doesn’t back managers, doesn’t support them, is the next step for Frank Lampard rather than a club that he’d have huge currency with and would no doubt give him some degree of assurances that they are going to give him an opportunity to have a go.

“So I would be surprised given the character of Lampard but you never know in this industry where you can always be disappointed.”

Coventry are currently top of the Championship table, and have maintained their place inside the top two for much of the campaign.

Next up for the Sky Blues is a trip to face Norwich City on 26 January in an 8pm kick-off.

Frank Lampard will attract attention with Coventry form

Lampard is a big name due to his playing career, so he is going to get extra attention when things are going well in his coaching career.

So it’s no surprise to see him being linked with a return to the Premier League given how Coventry are performing this season.

It would be tempting to make the jump to Selhurst Park, even if the Sky Blues are promoted, as they offer greater stability in the top flight at this stage.

The manner of Glasner’s exit may be offputting, but the opportunity to jump up the ladder may be too great for that to really factor into Lampard’s decision, should he be approached by Palace this year.
