32 years on from 1994, the World Cup returns to the United States, and both the tournament and the host look very different.

L'Équipe notes that the event beginning on Thursday has changed significantly from 1994. It opens with Mexico v South Africa at 21:00.

On 17 June 1994 at Soldier Field, Chicago, the United States became the centre of world football for the first time. Over the next month the matches flowed until Brazil were crowned in a country not renowned for its passion for the sport.

This time, at FIFA's initiative, the format has been reworked.

The hosts now share the tournament with Mexico and Canada, have shuffled some host cities, replaced every stadium, and set bolder sporting ambitions.
