Manchester United Target Tonali and Ederson in Major Midfield Push

Manchester United are preparing an ambitious midfield rebuild, with Sky Sports Italy reporting that the club are working on deals for Sandro Tonali and Ederson.

The report states: “The English club is working for a double blow in midfield. The targets are Sandro Tonali of Newcastle and Ederson of Atalanta.”

That wording matters. This is not framed as casual interest, but as a serious attempt to reshape a key department before United return to the Champions League next season.

Tonali Offers Premier League Pedigree

Tonali would represent a major statement. Since joining Newcastle from Milan in 2023, the Italy international has become one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders.

Sky Sports Italy note that Tonali has played 53 games this season and missed just four games between league and cups. That durability, combined with his Champions League experience, makes him a logical target for United.

The report adds that Tonali “would remain in the Premier League,” with Newcastle set to finish outside the top eight.

Ederson Race Adds Urgency

Ederson, meanwhile, has been central to Atalanta again. Sky Sports Italy describe him as “a point of reference for Atalanta again this year,” with 41 appearances, three goals and two assists in 2025/26.

At 27 in July, he is entering peak years. Atletico Madrid are also interested, but the report claims they are “currently at a disadvantage.”

That gives United encouragement, though this is exactly where speed matters. Ederson’s profile, energy, ball winning, carrying power and tactical discipline, feels tailor made for the intensity expected at Old Trafford.

Midfield Rebuild Could Define United’s Summer

United have spent years searching for balance in midfield. Tonali brings control, tempo and Premier League experience. Ederson offers physicality, defensive coverage and forward thrust.

Sky Sports Italy’s most significant line is clear: “There is confidence on the part of the management to close both operations in the next summer transfer market.”

If United pull this off, it would be more than squad depth. It would be a structural shift. A Tonali and Ederson double deal would give the manager a midfield platform capable of competing domestically and in Europe.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From a Manchester United perspective, this is exactly the type of report that gets the pulse racing. Tonali and Ederson in the same window would be serious business.

United have lacked legs, control and authority in midfield for too long. Tonali would bring class and Premier League sharpness. He knows the pace, he knows the league, and he has already shown he can handle big stages. Ederson would add bite, power and that relentless engine United fans love to see.

The most exciting part is the balance. This would not be a vanity move. It would feel planned. Tonali could dictate, Ederson could destroy and drive, and suddenly United’s midfield would look far harder to play through.

Champions League football demands more than reputation. It needs depth, durability and players who can handle pressure twice a week. Tonali playing 53 games and Ederson passing 40 appearances shows both have the resilience required.

If United really have confidence in closing both deals, supporters should be thrilled. This could be the summer where midfield stops being a weakness and becomes the foundation.
