Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has made a worrying prediction for Southampton in their upcoming fixture. Up against Manchester United at Old Trafford, Merson thinks the hosts would rattle the Saints 3-0.
Southampton's recent FA Cup win saw them break their 11-game winless streak. This perfectly sums up the kind of campaign they have had this season so far.
However, the situation feels even more worrying for the Saints in the Premier League. Foreseeing relegation, Ivan Juric's side needs a miraculous turnover if they are to continue in the first division.
But things don't seem improving for them any soon. At least, that is the opinion of Sky Sports Pundit Paul Merson, ahead of their upcoming game against Manchester United.
Although having represented Arsenal in his footballing career, Merson has predicted an easy win here for the Red Devils. In his Sportskeeda column, he wrote: "Manchester United should win this game. If they don't win it, oh my god that would be an absolute disaster."
But the most distressing part was yet to come. Merson went further, expressing his concern that Southampton might register the lowest point record ever in Premier League history.
Writing on their situation, Merson continued: "I just don't see how they can win a game, so I wouldn't be surprised if they register fewer points than Derby County (11) back in 2007/08 season."
Though it is difficult to acknowledge this as a Saints fan, Paul Merson's prediction might become a devastating reality.
Up next, Southampton has three difficult games in a row in the Premier League. Then comes a winnable game against Ipswich Town. But post that, they would be subjected to a string of challenging sides once again.
Clearly, the Saints are in it for a difficult second half of the season. Let's just hope that their FA Cup win inspires a comeback for the remaining Premier League campaign.
