Arne Slot has insisted Real Madrid do not always get their man amid an approach from the Spanish side for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool have turned down a bid from Real Madrid to sign Alexander-Arnold in the January transfer window. However, the right-back is out of contract in the summer and free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with the European champions.

Alexander-Arnold has remained tightlipped on his future despite suggestions from Spain that the 26-year-old has agreed to join Real Madrid. It is understood that the defender has not communicated to Liverpool an intention to leave as things stand.

Real Madrid have a long history of luring top players, with recent Bosman additions of David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger and Kylian Mbappe. This week, ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid forward Michael Owen said a public approach from the Spaniards hints a deal may already have been agreed.

“The very fact that Real Madrid have now made their intentions clear towards signing Trent Alexander Arnold leads me to believe that it’s only a matter of time before he signs for them,” Owen wrote on X.

“If he was going to sign a contract extension, Madrid wouldn’t have officially made their move. Secretive talks will have taken place. Huge news.”

Slot was again asked about Alexander-Arnold’s future, ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday. The Dutchman insisted it is no certainty that the defender will depart and pointed to the example of Steven Gerrard, who turned down Real Madrid to remain at Liverpool during his time at Anfield.

“I think there was one player (Gerrard) they would have really loved to have but he didn’t come. You know him better than me. So it has happened.”
