Mohamed Salah, like most of his Liverpool teammates, has massively struggled for form this season.
Off the back of a historic season last year, scoring 34 goals and assisting another 23 across all competitions, the Egyptian King was tied down to a two-year contract.
However, this season Salah has struggled. He has still managed 12 goals and nine assists across all competitions.
And now, Salah has confirmed his decision to leave the club at the end of the season, despite still having one year remaining on his deal.
But at the age of 33, this drop-off is to be expected isn’t it? Not according to former Liverpool defender Markus Babbel, who spoke exclusively to EPL Index.
When asked whether he believes Salah has made the right decision over his future, Babbel offered a firm response:
“I think it was the right decision. It was a tough season for him and it’s not what we know of him,” said Babbel, “He’s always been the player to make a difference, but we haven’t seen that much this season.”

“I’m not sure if the relationship with Arne Slot was the best because it looks like he’s not too happy with the manager. At times I was surprised that Slot let him on the pitch because he was so bad!”
“We can all play bad, but he wasn’t working for the team and that is the biggest disappointment,” continued Babbel, “I would’ve taken him out of the team earlier.”
Despite his fairly bruising verdict on the forward, Babbel was still keen to praise Salah for his impact at Liverpool since his arrival back in 2017.
“But over the last ten years he has been an absolute superstar, but this season it has been very difficult for him.”
“He is a legend there and one of the best player to have ever played for Liverpool.”
“What next? If he wants to earn a lot of money then Saudi makes sense, but I’m not sure many European sides can afford him.”
It remains to be seen where Salah will be playing next season. As Babbel points out, the Saudi Pro League remains the most likely destination, whilst some reports have linked him with a potential return to Italy.
But for now, there’s still five games left and Salah will be eager to end his illustrious Liverpool career on a high. His winner in the Merseyside Derby was certainly a good way to kickstart his final chapter.
