Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has come under scrutiny following his costly mistake against Hull City at the weekend.

The Black Cats were beaten 1-0 by Ruben Selles' side at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, with Patterson's first-half own goal proving to be the decisive moment.

Patterson has been the first-choice goalkeeper for Sunderland for a few seasons now, and he has been seen as a reliable option for the majority of that time, but his recent form has led to some questions over whether he should keep his place.

Backup goalkeeper Simon Moore has kept three clean sheets in four Championship appearances this season, so there is an argument that he should be given an opportunity to prove himself between the sticks after Patterson's dip in form.

Sunderland urged to drop Anthony Patterson

We asked our Sunderland fan pundit, Jordan Newcombe, whether he feels as though Patterson's starting position should be under threat following his mistake against the Tigers.

"Regarding Anthony Patterson, I do still think he should be the starting goalkeeper," said Jordan.

"However, I do think we should rotate him with Simon Moore for a bit, especially after the mistakes that he has been making. They have been some of the worst mistakes that a 'keeper can make.

"There is no communication there, he is not shouting at his other teammates to let them know he is getting the ball, which is what led to the goal against Hull.

"Obviously, what he should have done there was shout at Patrick Roberts to let him know he was going for the ball. Unfortunately, he hasn't done that, he has kept quiet, and they have both collided.

"It is stuff like that we don't need. This is a reason why we are not getting as many points as we can, because we are not taking our chances and we are making silly mistakes, and that is what's hurting us.

"Whether it is last-minute goals or some of the most silly goals, these little mistakes are costing us every single game, and if it keeps on going, then we are not going to make the play-offs.

"It could come to the point where, if Patterson still starts, we could absolutely have a rotter and just draw or lose every one of these games with the teams below us, which could reduce the gap between ourselves and the teams outside the play-offs.

"The top two is now gone for Sunderland due to these mistakes. I would still like Patterson to be the starting goalkeeper, but I would also like to see some rotation.

"What I would like to see against Sheffield Wednesday is Simon Moore in goal."

Anthony Patterson will hope he is trusted to find his form

Patterson is a goalkeeper who has kept 37 clean sheets in the Championship since the beginning of the 2022/23 season, so he will no doubt be desperate to get back to his best during the run-in for Sunderland.

The 24-year-old has previously been linked with the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, while Southampton were reportedly keen on bringing him in during the summer transfer window, so he is clearly more than capable of contributing to a promotion push in the Championship when he is at his best.

It will be interesting to see whether Regis Le Bris does decide to give Patterson some time on the sidelines or if he continues to start as the goalkeeper, but as Jordan explained, Sunderland cannot afford to keep dropping points in the manner that they have been, so it could be worth giving Moore a chance at Hillsborough on Friday night.
