The Saints are keen to bolster their options in between the sticks

The January transfer window is looming and Southampton have set their sights on two goalkeepers as Tonda Eckert looks to strengthen his Saints side.

Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson and Bayern Munich keeper Daniel Peretz are two names being targeted by the Saints to help provide competition to Gavin Bazunu and Alex McCarthy in goal, as per Sky Sports' Transfer Centre (12:13).

Patterson, 25, has struggled for game-time in the Premier League under Regis Le Bris having only made one appearance in the EFL Cup this term, with Robin Roefs the preferred option at the Stadium of Light.

Southampton aren't alone in the pursuit of Patterson though, as QPR and Leicester City are also courting the ex-England U21 international ahead of the January transfer window.

An academy graduate who has built his career at the Stadium of Light, Patterson has racked up more than 150 senior appearances for the Black Cats, keeping 14 clean sheets in the 2024/25 Championship campaign as the Black Cats secured promotion via the play-offs.

Daniel Peretz is in need of minutes as Southampton plot move

As for Peretz, he finds himself on loan at Hamburg but has failed to muster a single appearance for the German outfit with Vincent Kompany's Bayern Munich now keen to cut short his loan spell and send him elsewhere.

Prior to joining Bayern Munich, he made over 70 league appearances for Maccabi Tel Aviv and even scored twice during a loan spell early in his career.

Since joining Bayern in 2023, he has made a handful of first-team appearances, including in the Bundesliga and Champions League, but has struggled to displace the ever present Manuel Neuer.

The goalkeeper situation at Southampton has been a source of contention for a lot of the Saints fanbase for the last two seasons, with doubts being raised over both Bazunu and McCarthy's suitability of being the number one at St Mary's.

Bazunu has been the preferred option this season having made 17 appearances to McCarthy's seven but with news that the Saints are looking at bolstering the goalkeeper department, both could find starts in the new year a lot harder to come by.

Meanwhile, the Saints have seen an up-turn in form since the dismissal of Will Still and the confirmation of Tonda Eckert as his replacement - with the south coast outfit winning six of their last 11 league matches.
