Southampton look likely to miss out on Tottenham prospect Will Lankshear, who is in advanced talks over a permanent move to Middlesbrough, according to Football.London.

There has since been an update, with the 21-year-old set to undergo a medical at the Riverside, Sky Sports reports.

Lankshear had been Tonda Eckert’s preferred option to bolster a thin striker group, with Ross Stewart departing and Cameron Archer linked with West Bromwich Albion.

There have been positives this summer, with Cyle Larin and Daniel Peretz returning after aiding last season’s late promotion push. Southampton also retain Shea Charles for now as the Leeds United saga drags on, and he could feature early next season if it remains unresolved.

Missing out to Middlesbrough will grate, with rancour lingering after Spygate, when Eckert’s side were kicked out of last season’s play-offs for prying on Kim Hellberg’s preparations.

Lankshear scored 11 goals for Oxford United last season. Southampton will now turn to alternatives, and Ivan Azon might become their fallback option.
