Hamburg have moved ahead of Werder Bremen in the race to sign Southampton forward Damion Downs.
According to Kicker, Downs will undergo a medical on Tuesday before joining HSV on loan for the remainder of the season with an option to buy.
After joining the Championship club from 1. FC Köln for €8m in July, Downs has failed to score for his new club, and hasn’t featured for the Saints since sustaining an injury in November.
Looking to revive his form in a World Cup year, the USMNT striker is joining a Hamburg side that have scored just 16 goals after 15 matchdays, the fourth worst attack in the Bundesliga.
Hamburg’s imminent signing of Downs proves a major transfer coup for Merlin Polzin’s side, who beat Nordderby rivals Werder Bremen to the American’s signature.
The Werneck-native also comes with Bundesliga experience, having played 10 games, returning two goals, during Köln’s relegation campaign in 2023/24.
