Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are set to face each other in a highly anticipated Spanish Super Cup final tie tonight. This is the third consecutive time that these two teams are facing each other in the Super Cup final, and both will be looking to prove their superiority in this match after each having won one of the last two finals.
The last El Clasico was not an event to remember for the Merengues, as the Blaugranes emerged as 0-4 winners in that game, despite playing at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, it has been some months since that defeat, and the two teams have seen their forms change considerably during that time.
Still, there is no doubt that this last encounter was a humiliating one for Los Blancos. Barring Eduardo Camavinga, no other players from Real Madrid shone in that game and the team in general struggled against Hansi Flick’s juggernaut.
But one player who struggled the most in this game was the recent Merengue arrival Kylian Mbappe, whose first El Clasico experience could not have been worse.
In addition to the misery of being on the losing side, the Frenchman also had to endure a very difficult night. He struggled a lot while dealing with the offside trap set by the Barcelona defence, and was whistled for offside a whopping 8 times in that game, 6 times only in the first half.
No other player in the top 5 European leagues has been whistled for offside this many times in a single match. These offside whistles also cost him and his side dearly, as he was able to send the ball into the back of the net twice, but both of these goals were ruled out for offside.
There were several other issues in his game other than this ability to keep track of the high Barcelona backline, and this was one of the lower points in the first half of his first season at Real Madrid, in which he faced significant issues and faced a lot of criticism, but still performed quite well overall.
His form has improved significantly lately and he has already scored 10 goals and provided 2 assists in 17 La Liga appearances. He is now also combining better with his teammates and provides 1.2 key passes on average in each game.
Slowly, the 2018 World Cup Winner is getting back to his best level after having joined Real Madrid last summer. But the match against Barcelona tonight is doubtlessly going to be quite a difficult test for him, and hopefully, he will take this opportunity to get some quick vengeance against Barcelona for his humiliating defeat earlier in the season.
