Sparta Rotterdam have Mitchell van Bergen (25) in their sights, according to Voetbal International. The FC Twente winger is a key target, although players will have to leave Het Kasteel in order to make the move happen.
Earlier this winter, Eredivisie-strugglers Sparta signed Icelandic attacker Nökkvi Thórisson and FC Twente midfielder Carel Eiting, who both came on loan (Thórisson with an option to buy).
That said, a wingman has been on the wish list for a while and FC Twente may once again offer a solution. In Enschede, they are open to a temporary departure of the lightning-fast Van Bergen, who has not done enough to nail down a consistent starting spot with the Tukkers.
It is understood that Sparta will have to let players leave to make this move possible. When Eiting was signed, it was already clear that they were taking into account the departure of one or two midfielders at Spangen. Arno Verschueren (contract expiring in the summer), Metinho (on loan from the City Football Group, but not in the starting line-up) and Hamza El Dahri (talent with little prospect of a starting position at the moment) are logical names to consider, although Sparta is open to the departure of any selection player if there are good offers.
Manager Maurice Steijn said previously: “The competition in midfield is increasing and some players will draw conclusions. Initially, that will be about finding minutes elsewhere for six months, but I can also imagine that players will leave permanently. I don’t rule anything out.”
FC Twente have also had a busy January. Naci Ünüvar was brought in while Eiting, Mats Rots (Heracles Almelo) and Issam El Maach (Roda JC) were all loaned out.
