The Disciplinary Board of the Portuguese Football Federation has shelved Sporting’s April complaint against Gabri Veiga over a challenge on Hjulmand in the second leg of the Portuguese Cup semi-finals.
According to O Jogo, the decision was taken unanimously by the panel.
The incident occurred in the 14th minute when the Porto midfielder stepped on Hjulmand’s right ankle. No foul was awarded by the team led by referee Miguel Nogueira.
In its submission, Sporting argued Veiga caught Hjulmand’s right ankle with his studs without playing the ball and used excessive force. Hjulmand received medical attention and the club sought a suspension for Veiga until the midfielder was fit to return.
During the inquiry, the refereeing team and the video assistants were heard, after which the board ordered the disciplinary proceedings to be closed. The decision can be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The VAR and assistant VAR said they reviewed the incident in full and maintained it was not a clear and obvious error, so there was no intervention.
