Sporting CP have decided to part ways with Joao Pereira, who was named Ruben Amorim’s successor only in November.

The new Manchester United gaffer became one of the most sought-after managerial names in Europe after leading Sporting to their first Liga Portugal title after a wait of nearly two decades.

Even this season, the Lisbon-based outfit were flying under the 39-year-old tactician, who oversaw 11 victories in the opening 11 league outings before deciding to join United.

Many still questioned Amorim’s pedigree, owing to his lack of experience of managing a team in Europe’s top leagues. In particular, a few doubters scoffed at Sporting’s two league title wins under the Portuguese coach, as ending Benfica and Porto’s dominance wasn’t considered a great achievement.

However, Sporting’s struggles following Amorim’s exit have underlined just how brilliant work he did in Lisbon.

Early in November, Pereira took over from Amorim as head coach of Sporting after his role as reserve team manager.

Sporting have failed to replicate the same performances and results under Pereira, who has only managed one win in his four league games as the side’s new boss.

They now sit second in the table, a point behind rivals Benfica. Porto have also caught Sporting and are now level on points.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Sporting’s hierarchy have had enough and have decided to sack Pereira. He wrote: “The decision has been made today. João Pereira will leave the club.”

As per A Bola, Rui Borges, who is currently manager of Vitoria Guimaraes, will replace Pereira.

Amorim’s reputation is only going to improve in Lisbon following the development. However, he faces the daunting task of steadying the ship at Old Trafford.

United have performed relatively well under him, but the results haven’t been very promising. Further, off-field issues have only made things trickier for the new gaffer.
