Sporting Kansas City are hoping to sign former Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah this summer, according to the Daily Mail.
However, any deal remains unlikely. Saudi Pro League clubs are determined to lure Salah to the Middle East, while the player favours staying in European football.
Salah has not ruled out a move to join a Major League Soccer (MLS) club as he weighs up the next step in his career after Egypt’s World Cup campaign ended with a dramatic last-16 defeat to Argentina.
Sporting KC’s interest is being driven by the club’s ambitious new ownership group.
Majority owner Peter Mallouk, whose family has Egyptian roots, is eager to transform the club’s fortunes after a difficult campaign.
They are already pursuing Toulouse winger Yann Gboho and Olympiacos attacker Andre Luiz, with both deals potentially worth around $18 million.
Salah’s final season at Liverpool failed to match the extraordinary standards he had previously set.
He registered only seven league goals and seven assists after producing a title-winning campaign the year before, when he scored 29 league goals and added 18 assists.
The former Basel and Chelsea star bagged 257 goals and 123 assists in 442 games for the Merseyside outfit.
His exit brought the curtain down on a glittering nine-year spell at Anfield, where he established himself as one of the best players in the club’s history.
Sporting KC are bottom of the MLS Western Conference but are expected to use an available Designated Player slot to make a marquee signing. Salah is their most ambitious target yet.
