Sporting San Miguelito, CS Herediano seek to rise in Group B

MIAMI – The 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup continues with Sporting San Miguelito hosting CS Herediano in Group B on Thursday at Estadio Universitario in Penonomé, Panama.
The encounter pits two teams that seek a victory to secure a spot in the top two in the group. Sporting San Miguelito is third with four points, separated from second place on tiebreakers while CS Herediano is fourth with three points.
Sporting San Miguelito seeks to build on a 2-1 victory against Cacique Diriangén FC. Ángel Valencia and Ramses De León scored in the encounter to help the team to its first victory of the campaign.
CS Herediano will seek to rebound from a 4-2 loss at Diriangén in matchweek two. Marcel Hernández and Jurguens Montenegro lead the side with two goals apiece in the CAC.
Historic series
Sporting San Miguelito and CS Herediano will face each other for the first time in a Concacaf club tournament.
Sporting San Miguelito won their last match 2-1 in Week Three against Diriangén (Ángel Valencia 2’ and Ramses De León 22’) and it is the first time the club started the tournament unbeaten in their first two games.
For Sporting San Miguelito, this will be the second time they face a Costa Rican club in the history of the Central American Cup, after their 0-1 loss to LD Alajuelense in Matchday 4 of Group D on August 24, 2023, at Estadio Rommel Fernández in Ciudad de Panamá (PAN), goal by Honduran Alexander López.
For CS Herediano, this will be their third encounter against Panamanian clubs in the CCAC, achieving two victories. The first was a 1-0 win over Tauro FC on July 30, 2024, in Matchday 1 of Group A at Estadio Nacional in San José (CRC), goal by John Jairo Ruíz. The second was a 1-0 victory against San Francisco FC on August 22, 2024, at Estadio Universitario in Penonomé (PAN), goal by Yendrick Ruíz.
Sporting San Miguelito has faced Costa Rican clubs three times in official tournaments, losing once in the Central American Cup and twice in the Concacaf Champions Cup (W-1 L-1). Their only victory was 1-0 against LD Alajuelense on August 22, 2013, in Matchday 2 of Group 4 in the 2013/2014 Concacaf Champions Cup at Estadio Rommel Fernández in Ciudad de Panamá (PAN), goal by John Pretelt.
CS Herediano leads the historic series against Panamanian opponents
CS Herediano has faced Panamanian clubs 12 times in official tournaments, holding a record of W-10 D-1 L-1. These matches include two wins in the Central American Cup, four in the Concacaf Champions Cup (W-3 D-1), four in the Scotiabank Concacaf League (W-3 L-1), and two wins in the Copa INTERCLUBES. Their only defeat against a Panamanian club was a 1-0 loss to CD Árabe Unido in the second leg of the Scotiabank Concacaf League semifinals on September 27, 2018, at Estadio Rommel Fernández in Ciudad de Panamá (PAN), goal by Alexis Palacios. CS Herediano won the series 2-1 on aggregate and later lifted the trophy by defeating FC Motagua in the final.
