Sports Personality of the Year is just around the corner and the latest betting saw yet another change over the weekend as England’s Red Roses won the Rugby World Cup.

Over the weekend two names shortened for Sports Personality of the Year making it arguably a two horse race.
Rory McIlroy moved to just behind Chloe Kelly in the betting. McIlroy led Europe to a huge upset away from home in the Ryder Cup after a nervy weekend.
USA fought back late on Sunday afternoon but the visitors were able to stand tough in a gritty win to secure a historic title in New York.
After winning the Masters in summer, McIlroy completed the Grand Slam in golf and would be a worthy favourite for Sports Personality of the Year.
Rory McIlroy: "I don't think there's going to be a better year in my golfing career." 👏👏 #RyderCup–
But despite Europe’s win in the Ryder Cup and McIlroy’s Grand Slam, Chloe Kelly remains the favourite to win the award in December.
The Lioness enjoyed a sensational summer as England were crowned back to back European champions.
Kelly was at the centre of everything good for her nation at the Euros, with late goals galore off the bench keeping England in the competition.
Arsenal’s new permanent signing was a key factor in both of England’s European Championship’s and this year she could be rewarded with the prestigious Sports Personality of the Year award.
Currently there is nothing separating Kelly and McIlroy in the betting, with the Lioness only just favoured.
While the award looks to be fought out between McIlroy and Kelly, there was a late charge from some stars at the Rugby World Cup.
The English Red Roses won the tournament after a dominant win over Canada in the final on Sunday.
England’s Ellie Kildunne is the World Cup star who has thrown her name in for Sports Personality.
Kildunne was named as the 2024 Player of the Tournament at the Women’s Six Nations. The 26-year-old was also named World player of the year in 2025 before the World Cup even started.
At the World Cup Kildunne continued to be influential and with a try in the final to put the finishing touches on England’s tournament, the fullback is a worthy Sports Personality contender.
Should the England star win the award, she would become the first-ever women’s rugby player to achieve the prize.
Jonny Wilkinson is the only rugby player to have ever lifted the award.
There is still a while until Sports Personality of the Year is officially announced.
This year’s ceremony will be held in Salford in mid-December and as usual will be presented by the BBC.
There is only three months until the winner is announced, but with no major tournaments between now and the new year the leading contenders are likely to remain the same.
