Spurs are reportedly attempting to hijack Chelsea’s move for Xavi Simons in the summer transfer window.
The Dutch attacker has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer after telling RB Leipzig he wants to leave the club following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.
The Blues have been negotiating a deal in the region of £60 million for Simons, who has also been linked with Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
Spurs were first linked with a move for the 25-year-old last week, but officially entered the race for his signature on Thursday as Florian Plettenberg reported they have submitted an offer to Leipzig.
It is claimed that Tottenham have bid €70 million (£60.5m), while Chelsea are yet to make an offer.
Leipzig have “granted Xavi Simons permission” to travel to London to “resolve his future”, according to The Athletic.
Chelsea are likely accelerate their pursuit of the attacking midfielder after agreeing to sell Christopher Nkunku to AC Milan in a deal worth up to €42 million (£36m). But Leipzig will only sell their star player if their demands are met.
Spurs, meanwhile, are eager to add more creativity to their squad after losing James Maddison to a serious knee injury. They have already tried and failed to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest and Eberechi Eze, who last week swapped Crystal Palace for Arsenal.
The Lilywhites could very well be left frustrated yet again, however, after Fabrizio Romano previously reported that Simons will snub offers from clubs other than Chelsea.
