Tottenham Hotspur are in discussions with Brazilian side Bahia over a permanent transfer for striker Alejo Veliz.
Talks are ongoing between the clubs, with no fee agreed at this stage, but both clubs are willing to explore a deal.
Any agreement would require Veliz’s current loan spell at Rosario Central to be terminated early, despite the deal originally running until June 2026.
The 22-year-old returned to his boyhood club last summer after an underwhelming first year in Europe and has shown signs of recovery in familiar surroundings.
Veliz has scored five goals in 16 appearances for Rosario since rejoining the club, offering enough encouragement to attract external interest again.
His time at Tottenham has been limited, with all eight of his senior appearances for the club coming during the 2023/24 season.
Veliz’s only goal for Spurs was in a 4-2 Premier League defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in December 2023, when he scored as a late substitute.
Loan spells away from Tottenham have produced mixed returns, including an unproductive stint at Sevilla and a more stable period at Espanyol in La Liga, where he scored four times in 16 outings.
Bahia are majority-owned by City Football Group and have been actively strengthening their squad ahead of a demanding continental campaign.
From Tottenham’s perspective, the move would bring clarity to a situation that has remained unresolved since Veliz’s arrival from Rosario in 2023.
Spurs paid around £13 million for the striker as a teenager, viewing him as a long-term project with physical and aerial qualities suited to the Premier League.
However, a lack of consistent opportunities, coupled with adaptation issues, prevented him from establishing himself under successive managers.
Tottenham are now open to a clean break, with the expectation that a permanent sale would better serve both player and club.
Veliz is understood to be open to the move as he seeks regular football and a more defined role.
