On Tuesday night, there was more UEFA World Cup qualification action for Spurs players Ben Davies, Brennan Johnson, and their Wales side, as they faced North Macedonia away from home. In their opening game on Saturday, Davies scored and assisted in a 3-1 win at home to Kazakhstan in Cardiff.
For this game, both Davies and Johnson were once again named in the starting XI by manager Craig Bellamy. This time, Davies played as a left back – having played as a left back in a back four on Saturday – whilst Johnson was again tasked with leading the line up front.
In the first half, Wales had most of the ball, with 65% possession, but struggled to break down their hosts, with only one clear cut chance to show for it, and the sides went into the half time interval goalless.
During the second half, Wales did create more opportunities, but struggled to make them count. With just under twenty minutes to go, Johnson had an effort cleared off the line. They were made to pay for that, as Macedonia took the lead in the first minute of stoppage time, as the hosts took the lead.
Everyone thought that was going to be enough to condemn Wales to their first defeat of the Bellamy era, but six minutes into stoppage time, they managed to bundle the ball over the line, securing a point and making it eight games unbeaten under Bellamy since he took over in the summer of last year.
As for Davies, it was another 90 minutes, as he skippered the side once again. Throughout the game, he recorded; two clearances, one interception, one tackles, 82 touches of the ball, one chance created, 3/6 accurate long balls, 2/4 ground duels won, 3/5 aerial duels won, and one foul drawn.
It was, unfortunately, another quiet night for Johnson, whom still looks uncomfortable playing up front, it definitely does not suit him. He was replaced after 84 minutes, with his only effort of the game being the aforementioned attempt that was cleared off the line. In general he struggled to make much of an impact on the game.
Both players international breaks are now over, and they will return to Spurs.
As for Wales, this leaves them in second place in the group, below North Macedonia on goal difference, with four points from their two games so far. It is worth mentioning that Belgium have not played any games yet due to their Nations League campaign.
