Stade Rennais have emerged as frontrunners to sign Sunderland striker Eliezer Mayenda, with interest rising after the club opened the door to a sale and the forward sought a fresh opportunity.

Foot Mercato reports the Ligue 1 side are in advanced talks over a permanent deal.

If completed, the move would deliver a major profit on the initial €1 million Sunderland paid Sochaux three years ago. The package is expected to be worth about £22 million including add-ons, and would strengthen the club’s SCR position this summer and beyond. Sochaux are thought to retain a significant sell-on clause.

Sunderland rate Mayenda highly but accept his desire for more minutes after spending much of last season as third-choice striker. His pathway to a regular starting role on Wearside is not seen as likely to change soon, with Brian Brobbey enhancing his reputation with stellar performances for the Netherlands at the World Cup.

A deal is not yet finalised and rival interest remains, so the picture could still change.

Should he join Rennes, Mayenda would have the chance to bid farewell at the Stadium of Light when the sides meet in a pre-season friendly on 15 August.

Both clubs have qualified for the Europa League group stages, so a competitive meeting next season is also possible.
