Neither the opponent nor the scenario was easy, but Girona fought from start to finish and, despite leaving without a point, left a positive feeling against the co-leader of the competition. Míchel Sánchez's men had four very clear chances to score, but a brilliant goal by Modric before the break and a goal by Vinicius in the final stretch settled a competitive match with alternatives for both teams.
Arnau had the first goal of the match in his boots in the opening minutes, but his cross-shot was deflected by Courtois. Van de Beek also came very close. The Dutch midfielder was all alone in the area and crossed the ball in front of Courtois, who was again great to deflect the shot with his hand. With Real Madrid also making their presence felt in Gazzaniga's area, the Girona side threatened again with a cross from Danjuma that Tsygankov shot high at the far post in a good position to finish. Despite the good image shown on the pitch, Girona were penalized by a great goal from Modric just before the break. The Croatian struck the ball from outside the area and sent it into the back of the net at the long post.
At the restart, Danjuma had the chance to equalize right from the start. The striker attacked the space and got the ball inside the area, but in front of the exit of Courtois he did not find the three posts in his finish. The home side also continued to try to extend their lead, but a dangerous shot from Lucas Vázquez was saved by Gazzaniga, and another from Vinicius hit the crossbar and went wide. In the final stretch, the Brazilian striker received a through ball and stretched his leg to beat the Argentine goalkeeper at the near post.
