Phil Neumann struck in the eighth minute to set Birmingham City on their way to a 2-1 win over Bristol City. The German centre-back's opener shaped a disciplined display at both ends.

Attacking a second phase set piece, Neumann stayed up and steered a right-footed finish into the bottom right corner (8.). The early breakthrough let Birmingham compress space and play from a solid base.

From there he became the organiser at the back, reading crosses and clearing danger. He finished with eight clearances, three blocks and two tackles won, a numbers line that underlined how he protected the area in front of James Beadle.

Even after City converted a penalty (82.), Neumann's positioning and aerial work helped Birmingham handle the late surge, with the hosts' centre-backs meeting deliveries before they could drop.

It worked because Birmingham kept a compact back four and funnelled play wide, allowing Neumann to attack first balls whilst covering the space behind. The Robins were forced into crosses and second balls rather than clean looks between the lines.

Birmingham rise from 14th to 10th in the Championship. They visit Portsmouth next. City host Stoke next.
