Barcelona’s production line of elite defenders appears to have another special talent on its hands, with Pau Cubarsi continuing his remarkable rise on the international stage.
The Barcelona centre-back played another commanding role as Spain defeated France 2-0 to secure a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, while also reaching a milestone that places him ahead of one of football’s greatest defenders.
Still only 19, Cubarsi has established himself as an automatic starter under Luis de la Fuente, and his performances throughout the tournament have been defined by maturity, composure and defensive authority.
Against France, the Barcelona defender surpassed a Paolo Maldini World Cup record, adding another chapter to what has been an extraordinary young career.
Spain’s defensive strength has been one of the biggest stories of the FIFA World Cup 2026, and Cubarsi has been central to that success from the opening match.
The victory over France produced Spain’s sixth clean sheet of the tournament, with the Barcelona youngster starting every game of the campaign.
That defensive consistency has now earned Cubarsi a place in the World Cup record books.
By registering six clean sheets in just seven FIFA World Cup appearances, the Spanish international has become the quickest player to reach that landmark, moving ahead of legendary Italian defender Paolo Maldini.
While the clean-sheet record grabbed the headlines, Cubarsi’s individual performance against France was sublime, to say the least.
The Barcelona academy graduate completed 29 of his 32 passes, found every one of his long balls, played a pass into the final third and delivered another disciplined display without compromising Spain’s defensive structure.
Out of possession, the teenager was equally influential. He recorded two tackles, including a vital last-man intervention, produced four clearances, made two ball recoveries, won 100% of his aerial duels, and came out on top in two of his three ground duels.
By the final whistle, Cubarsi had accumulated seven defensive contributions, reinforcing his reputation as one of the standout defenders at this summer’s tournament.
